1787 JOHN MCLAUGHLIN – EXTRAPOLATION (Polydor, 1969)

extrapolation

Mclaughlin’s first album before he played on Miles’ groundbreakers In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew (Dave Holland would’ve played bass on this record had he not just joined that Miles band…). A clear precursor for the jazz-fusion phenomenon to come, but played in a stripped down ensemble with an almost perfect guitar tone. One of the main reasons I kept playing was because I received this album as a gift from a friend’s trumpeter dad when I was 18. The chordal work here (Two for Two especially) is what struck me — McLaugh can hit a lot of notes, but his chords are even better. My favorite of his work outside of Mahavishnu to be sure.
